The Consultation
During the initial consultation, a complete medical history will be taken in order to understand your unique physical profile
and lifestyle.
You may be asked about:
• Symptoms, areas of discomfort
• Medical history, medications
• Diet and lifestyle
• Digestive system
• Sleeping patterns
• Emotional state
The practitioner may take your pulse, examine your tongue and
palpate for areas of muscular tension or pain.
After this follows a short treatment. The whole session can last from 30- 60-90 minutes.
Treatment Plan
Based on the information collected during the initial consultation, the practitioner will establish a diagnosis and will then put together your personalised treatment plan, which may include lifestyle dietary advice, possibly natural supplements and/or a herbal remedy. Other than using needles a traditional acupuncture treatment may include other Chinese medicine techniques such as:
• Moxibustion: the application of indirect heat using moxa (therapeutic herbs) and/or heat lamps to warm and relax muscles and energize meridians.
• Chinese massage: to relieve muscle tension, stimulate acupressure points, open energy meridians and stimulate the flow of qi.
• Electro-acupuncture: a very low frequency electrical current (1Hz) applied to the needle to increase blood flow, relax muscle tissue and clea stagnant qi.
• Cupping: glass cups with a vacuum seal that are placed on the skin to stimulate blood flow and clear stagnant qi.
Lifestyle Advice
Your practitioner may suggest ways in which you can enhance the long-term effects of your treatment, for instance to introduce some changes to your diet and daily routine. Usually they are easy to do. You may be advised to consider using Natural Supplements or a Herbal Remedy. If necessary, you will be referred to other healthcare practitioners for specialist care.
What to expect
It’s best to come with loose clothing such as tracksuits, as needles may need to be inserted in your legs or trunk.
Most people find acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. You may feel tired or sleepy, some people feel a little tired
the next day. Acupuncture has hardly any side effects and any that may happen are generally mild and self-correcting. Cupping and guasha can sometimes temporarily mark the skin. Bruising usually clears within a day or two.
My aim is to improve your well being in the most gentle ways, without pressure, without judgment.
After a few sessions, most of the complaints are reduced and frequently altogether forgotten. I remind people that they will forget the discomfort, and they do, as is evident when I ask after it! I often say: You’ll feel better and you won’t know when it happened or that you felt bad!
The information collected from the client is dealt with in complete confidentiality and is for the sole benefit of diagnosis and a treatment plan.
